Healthtech is a challenging industry but recent news and graphs like this demonstrate why it can be so rewarding and addictive.
In the space of 100 years we are predicted to have gone from cervical cancer being the leading cause of cancer deaths in women to it being eliminated as a public health problem by 2040. The human experience has gone from a list of miserable symptoms, aggressive radiation, surgical removal of your uterus and cervix with uncertain survivability to a simple school-age vaccine and occasional at-home testing. How amazing is that?
It has been an incredible worldwide effort with major milestones across multiple pillars:
Research: Unmasking Human Papillomavirus (HPV) as the root cause of 99.7% of all cervical cancers
Diagnostics: Shifting from manual cell smears to ultra-precise molecular screening
Access: Launching one of the world's most successful and impactful population screening initiatives and continuing to evolve at-home testing
Intervention: Moving to true prevention with routine, population-level adolescent vaccines
It's easy to leave big health breakthroughs to the folks in labcoats developing vaccines but some of the biggest impacts have come from a population database and admin system as well as initiatives to make the screening experience more comfortable, convenient and discreet.
